The Cause and Effect Of Obesity

The following article was written by Richard Cooper, Independent Shaklee Distributor, 2010:
The deluge of American fat is killing our children, our adults, and our ability to compete in a global marketplace.
Statistics abound on the grim reality of our fat-crippled American future, and the impending doom our ever-increasing waistlines will inevitably cause is easy to grasp if one merely picks up a newspaper. Several news reports over the past few years have laid bare the desperate nature of our fat-laden situation:
A National Institutes of Health (NIH) study released in May 2006 demonstrated that despite the fact Americans spend twice as much per capita on health care as the British do (about $5,000 per year per person in the US versus about $2,500 per person per year in the UK), middle-aged white Americans are far sicker than their British counterparts. Compared with the Brits,
Americans showed significantly higher rates of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and cancer - -all conditions that are directly traceable to obesity. A June 2006 study by the Harvard School of Public Health found that similar results when comparing Americans' health with Canadians'.
Here is a little more truth that you may or may not know. "Results from the 2005-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) indicate that an estimated 32.7 percent of U.S. adults 20 years and older are overweight, 34.3 percent are obese and 5.9 percent are extremely obese (CDC Website, Statistics Page)." So when I say Americans are fat, there is some credibility to that statement.
On a positive note, obesity is something that can be reversed if each individual takes charge of their own well being. So the question is, "Can the current trend of obesity in America be reversed?" Sadly I'd have to say that Americans have dug themselves into a pretty deep hole and the likely hood that the trend will be reversed doesn't seem to be much of a reality at this point.
Fast food is inexpensive, abundant, and a big money maker. With the current state of the economy people are having to work extra hard to make ends meet. This means that they have less money to spend on things like gym memberships. People are also lazy and choose not to eat healthy or workout. So the stage is set for our society to stay on its current path.
Out of necessity, many obese people suffering from various complications and diseases have learned to change their diet.
Those people, with determination and a will to survive, have succeeded in becoming healthy once again. They have learned that cutting out meat products, processed foods, fast-foods, high sugar and high sodium foods, while incorporating whole grains, vegetables, fruits and legumes into the diet is the only way to return back to health. It is not easy to go against the strong current of an unhealthy society but it is a necessity.
